Skade works very well as a villain. You won't be disappointed in Athelflaed.and Uthred. I just home Bernard doesn't stray to far from the historical mark.

Oh that was a lovely book! I just didn't want it to end. I'm sorry Skade died, she was cool when she had it together but she lost her cool quick and that was her downfall.I'm very happy with Uthred and Athelflaed. I'd like to think BC will try and cool it off a bit between them, but you never know. I think he's using a little too much fiction to create her, even he says in the notes there isn't really a lot of info about her.

The Burning Land is one of my favorites in the series. I can't wait for the next one which I think will deal with the death of Alfred and the rebellion of Ethelwold against his cousin Edward. I think that's what was indicated on the Cornwell site.
The only character we know much about is Alfred himself due to Asher's biography. What we know about Athelflaed is that she is a "warrior women" so I would like to see Bernard make her a little less dependent on Uhtred and lead in her own right which we know she did. The romance between them is good though and adds a little spice. |

The more I read about Uthred, the more I enjoy these books.
He reminds me of Starbuck. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) But for some reason, I didn't car for this one as much as the others. I just didn't believe that Uthred would break one oath to flee north, only to keep another oath and come south again. Also, and I know Ragnar and Uthred are like brothers, but after all the planning - to just let Uthred leave and go fight for Alfred didn't seem to follow. But don't get me wrong here, this was still a wonderful book! -------------------- Shiny!

The more I read about Uthred, the more I enjoy these books. Had it not been for Athelflaed, Uhtred would never have returned South so you know what they said about the power of love. If he had stayed in the North the series would have ended with Uhtred never getting Bebbanburg back because the Danes lose to the Saxons. Uhtred had to be on the winning side to get his home back.
